History Underfoot: A Seminary Ridge Self-Guided Tour
Welcome to the self-guided walking tour of Seminary Ridge Trail, where the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg played out! Union and Confederate soldiers battled ferociously for control of this strategic ridge and its make-shift hospital. This walking tour transports you to July 1863, to view this bloody battleground from the eyes of the generals calling out orders, the soldiers fighting for their lives, and the civilians caught in the crossfire.
This tour is NOT an entry ticket to any museums along the trail. You can select any Travel Date for this tour since it’s completely self-guided and can be used infinitely.
After booking, you can check your email before downloading the Tour Guide App by Action, enter your unique password, and access your tour. The preceding steps require good internet/wifi access. Simply follow the audio instructions and the route from there.

You’re standing in the Lutheran Theological Seminary’s campus. Long before it became the site of some of Gettysburg’s most heated clashes, it had a much more peaceful purpose as the oldest Lutheran seminary in the country. Samuel Simon Schmucker founded it in 1826, which makes it older than prestigious universities like NYU or Cornell!
Note: The 1+ miles tour covers the essentials of Seminary Ridge in 30 minutes.

Today, this impressive brick building is the Seminary Ridge Museum and Education Center, which features Civil War exhibits, fascinating wartime accounts, and visits to the cupola on top.

You’re walking past Valentine Hall, and it’s a striking reminder that the Battle Of Gettysburg did NOT spell the end of the seminary. Why not- Well, because this hall didn’t appear until 25 years AFTER the battle!
