Full Day Guided Marvão Village and Castle Tour from Évora

Join us on this tour to experience the enchantment of the medieval village and castle of Marvão.

The construction of Marvão’s castle is attributed to Ibn Marwan in the 9th century. Three centuries later, Christian forces loyal to Afonso I, the first king of Portugal, conquered the town and its surrounding region. Marvão was particularly important due to its close proximity to the Spanish border and defensive location.

While Marvão’s castle is medieval, this tour will discuss the region's prehistoric past, in addition to its Roman period of occupation, and medieval history as well.

Today, Marvão provides the visitor an opportunity to visit the castle and its walls, its two encircled courtyards, its various towers, a well-preserved cistern, beautiful gardens, and a medieval town.

Itinerary
This is a typical itinerary for this product

Stop At: Portagem, Portagem, Sao Salvador da Aramenha, Portalegre District, Alentejo

Our journey commences at the heart of Évora, a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. We will rendezvous at the Roman Temple of Évora (also known as the Temple of Diana) at 10:30am, where our adventure begins.

We will make the 1 hour 35 minute drive from Évora to the River-Beach of Portagem. Here, we will visit the Roman Bridge of Portagem, located over the Sever River.

At this stop you will also have a chance to eat lunch (not provided) at a local cafe, or alternatively eat a lunch that you have packed, with plenty of spots to eat along the waterfront. While lunch is not provided as part of the tour, we believe in providing a delightful setting for you to enjoy your meal.

If you desire, you can even go for a swim at the River Beach of Portagem.

Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes

Stop At: Marvao, Marvao, Portalegre District, Alentejo

After lunch, we will regroup and embark on a short 10-minute drive to reach the captivating village and castle of Marvão. Once there, we will lead you on a tour of the castle grounds, revealing its rich history and captivating features. Visits to the castle require a ticket, the cost of which is included in this tour.

Following the guided portion (as in-depth or as short as the group prefers), you will have ample free time to explore the enchanting village and castle at your own pace. With its fairytale-like ambiance, every corner is worth exploring, ensuring you have a truly magical experience.

We will regroup to head back to Évora at 3:00pm and expect to arrive around 4:40pm. ​

Please note that pick-up time will vary according to how many groups are booked on a single tour. If you choose the hotel pick-up option, your pick-up time may be as much as 30 minutes prior to the tour start time. When you have made your booking, please specify the hotel you would like to be picked up from. We will let let you know what time you should be ready in your hotel lobby at least 24 hours prior to the tour. You will be greeted by your Tour Guide outside of your hotel.

Children under the age of 12 or under 1.5 meters in height are required to sit in the back seat of the vehicle in a child car seat or booster that is appropriate to their size. We do not provide car seats, so please remember to bring your own.

Please wear appropriate footwear (sneakers or hiking shoes are suggested).
