On this tour you’ll delve into Portugal’s Neolithic & Chalcolithic periods (circa 5500 to 2200 BC) and explore the region’s most remarkable sites, including the Menir of Almendres, the Cromlech of Almendres, and the Great Dolmen of Zambujeiro.

The Alentejo is home to many megalithic structures, including cromlechs, menirs, and dolmens. It is during this period when agriculture emerged, along with many other significant cultural and social developments.

Your tour guides are trained archaeologists and look forward to showing you some spectacular sites from Portugal's past.

Itinerary

Stop At: Cromeleque dos Almendres, Nossa Senhora de Guadalupe, Evora Portugal

Our meeting point for this excursion will be the Roman Temple of Évora. From there, we will embark on a short 25-minute drive to reach the Menir of Almendres. This impressive solitary standing stone, approximately 4 meters in height, holds significance as a prehistoric ritual site.

Next, we will proceed to the nearby Cromlech of Almendres, situated just a few minutes away by van. Often referred to as the Stonehenge of Portugal, this extraordinary site features two concentric circles formed by standing stones.

You will learn about the history of this spectacular site from archaeologists specializing in the prehistory of this region.

You will also have some free time to explore the site.

Duration: 1 hour 15 minutes

Stop At: Centro Interpretativo dos Almendres, Rua do Cromeleque Near Nossa Senhora de Guadalupe a 15 Kms de Évora, Evora 7000-092 Portugal

As we leave Almendres, we will make a stop at the interpretive centre/gift shop.

Stop At: Anta Grande do Zambujeiro, Nossa Senhora de Guadalupe, Evora 7005-566 Portugal

We will regroup and embark on a 25-minute drive to our next destination, the Great Dolmen of Zambujeiro (Anta Grande do Zambujeiro), a remarkable prehistoric burial site. Notably larger than other existing dolmens, this site holds great intrigue. We will delve into the archaeological discoveries made here.

Our return journey to Évora will commence thereafter, with drop-offs scheduled for around 12:00pm, conveniently timed for a delightful lunch in the city.

Please note that pick-up time will vary according to how many groups are booked on a single tour. If you choose the hotel pick-up option, your pick-up time may be as much as 30 minutes prior to the tour start time. When you have made your booking, please specify the hotel you would like to be picked up from. We will let let you know what time you should be ready in your hotel lobby at least 24 hours prior to the tour. You will be greeted by your Tour Guide outside of your hotel.

Children under the age of 12 or under 1.5 meters in height are required to sit in the back seat of the vehicle in a child car seat or booster that is appropriate to their size. We do not provide car seats, so please remember to bring your own.

Please wear appropriate footwear (sneakers or hiking shoes are suggested) as reaching the sites require some walking along dirt footpaths. Please note that these footpaths may be muddy after rainy weather.
