We cross Copenhagen harbor and then travel to Dragor, where we talk about the history of this pretty fishing village, including its Dutch connections. There is time here to eat, to walk down to the sea, to visit Dragor Fort and to do some shopping in the interesting little independent shops. After this and a photo-stop to get a picture of the Oresund Bridge.

The Rosenborg Castle, built in Dutch Renaissance style by King Christian IV. The exterior of this castle is exactly the same as the day it was built.

Stop At: The Little Mermaid, Langelinie, Copenhagen 2100 Denmark

The Little Mermaid has been sitting ion her rock since 1913. She was a gift from the founder of the Carlsberg Brewery, Carl Jacobsen. The sculpture, by Edvard Eriksen, is made of Bronze and sits on a granite rock, which is accessible at low tide. The sculpture was inspired by Hans Christian Andersen's story of a Mermaid, who falls in love with a human Prince, who does not love her. The Little Mermaid has been attacked and has been beheaded twice, has once had her arm cut off and has been splattered with red paint. A few years ago the words, 'Free Hong Kong' were painted on her.

Pass By: Frihedsmuseet, Churchillparken Esplanaden 13, Copenhagen 1263 Denmark

The Danish Resistance Museum is housed underground, in a new building, opened in 2020. The previous museum building burnt down in 2013, but luckily most of the items in the collection were saved. The museum tells the story of life under the German occupation of 1940 to 1945, with a particular focus on the activities of the Danish Resistance Groups.

Pass By: Gefionspringvandet, Churchillparken, Copenhagen Denmark

The Gefion Fountain is dedicated to the goddess Gefion, who turned her sons into oxen and ploughed the Island of Sjælland out of earth from Sweden. The fountain was paid for by the Carlsberg Foundation and designed by the Danish sculptor Anders Bundgaard , who sculpted it between 1897 and 1899.The basin was completed in 1908, the same year that the fountain was first activated.

Stop At: Changing of her Majesty's guard at Amalienborg Castle, Amalienborg Castle, Copenhagen Denmark

The Amalienborg Palaces date back to the 1760s, with the Royal Family moving in in 1794, when Christiansborg Castle burnt down. There are 4 Palaces here: Christian VIIs Palace, Christian VIII's Palace, Frederik VIII's Palace and Christian IX's Palace. Frederik VIII's Palace is where King Frederik X and Queen Mary stay, when they are in Copenhagen. The Life Guards take part in the changing of the guard here, every day at Midday.

Pass By: Marmorkirken Station, Marmorkirken, 1265 København, Denmark

The Marble Church or Frederiks Church was commissioned by King Frederik V and designed by Nicolai Eigtved, in 1740. Eigved died in 1754 and after his death the construction process began to slow down, with it stopping in 1770. In the late 1800s Ferdinand Melhdahl took over the design and due to a restricted budget, built the remaining portion of the church using limestone instead of marble. The Dome on top of the church is the third largest church dome in Europe.

Pass By: Oerestad, Arne Jacobsens Alle 12, Copenhagen 2300 Denmark

We cross Copenhagen harbour and then travel into Orestad. The whole suburb is new with some of Denmark's best modern architecture. After telling the story of Orestad, we travel through Vest Amager, past family homes from the 1970s, standing on long, orderly streets. Then we enter the countryside, telling our visitors about the history of Kongenlund and why it was planted.

Stop At: Dragoer, Dragoer, Taarnby Municipality, Copenhagen Region, Zealand

An old Dutch Style fishing village near Copenhagen, which is 500 years old. Take some time to walk around the charming little old houses and see the fishing boats moored along the quayside.

Stop At: Dragor Havn, Vestgronningen 4, Copenhagen 2791 Denmark

Coming to Dragor we talk about the history of this pretty fishing village, including its Dutch connections and encourage people to explore it. There is time here to eat, to walk down to the sea, to visit Dragor Fort and to do some shopping in the interesting little independent shops. After this and a photo-stop to get a picture of the Oresund Bridge, we travel around the side of Copenhagen Airport, telling the story of its history, from sheep eating the grass on the runway, to today's successful gateway to the world, that handles 29 million passengers per year.

Pass By: Christiansborg Slot, Prins Joergens Gaard 1, Copenhagen 1218 Denmark

Christiansborg is where the Danish parliament, which is called Folketing, meets. The present building dates back to 1928. Below the building are the old ruins of the first Copenhagen Castle, which was built in 1167, by Bishop Absalon. The first Christiansborg Palace was built by King Christian VI in 1740. In 1992 Christianborg's Church's roof caught fire, with the repairs being completed in 1997. Christiansborg is where you can find King Frederik X's throne and where he waved from the balcony, when he was installed by Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, as King. There are no coronations in Denmark.

Børsen is the old Stock Exchange building, which dates back to the 1620s and was built by King Christian IV and functioned as a stock exchange right up into the 1800s. Originally the upper floors were used as a marketplace to trade physical commodities. Today the building is owned by Dansk Erhverv, which is one of Denmark's biggest business and employers organisation. The spire above the building is made up of intertwined Dragons' tails.

Holmens Church was built in a former ancher forge by King Christian IV in 1619. It is both a parish church and the church dedicated and used by the Danish Royal Navy, which is appropriate, as its the only church in Denmark is next to sea water. When it was built, there was accommodation for naval officers in nearby Bremerholm. Inside the Church, there are models of ships hanging from the ceiling.

Pass By: Copenhagen King's Square, Kongens Nytorv Holmenskanal, Copenhagen 1050 Denmark

Kingens Nytorv was commissioned in 1670 by King Christian V. It is inspired by the Place d'Vendôme in Parism and was designed to be the centre of Copenhagen. Kongens Nytorv lies between the shopping street Strøget and Nyhavn, the old harbour area. The statue in the middle is of Christian V and was placed there in 1688. It is the oldest Royal statue in Copenhagen. Around Kongens Nytorv are the Royal Theatre and the Royal Academy of Arts, housed in the former Charlottenborg Palace.

Pass By: Det Kgl. Bibliotek, Soren Kierkegaards Pl. 1, Copenhagen 1221 Denmark

The Black Diamond, as it is known, was built in 1999 and houses the extension of the Royal Danish Library. It was designed by Schmidt, Hammer and Larsen and is built of black granite from Zimbabwe. It is attached, by a bridge to the main library building, which was built in 1906 by Hans J. Holm. There is a reading room, a music room, plus a cafe and bookshop.

Pass By: Bella Center Copenhagen, Center Boulevard 5, Copenhagen 2300 Denmark

Bella Center is Scandinavia's second largest conference and exhibition centre. It offers an indoor area of 121,800 square metres or 1,311,000 square feet and can hold 20,000 people. One of the Center's larger events is the Copenhagen International fashion Fair, the main event of Copenhagen Fashion Week, which is held twice a year in February and August. In 2002 the Bella Center hosted the European Union meeting where Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovakia became members of the EU.

Pass By: Lille Langebro, Cristiansbrygge / Langebrogade, Copenhagen 1219 Denmark

Langebro is a bridge that opens to allow large ships to pass through the harbour. It was built in 1954 and designed by Kaj Gottlob. It is 7 metres or 21 feet high and 35 metres or 106 feet long and is owned by Copenhagen City Council. The first Langebro was a bridge made of wood in 1690, which was built by King Christian V. In 2019 the concrete in the bridge was found to have been damaged by rainwater and so repair work started, which will cost 307 million Kroner or €40 million.

Pass By: Nyhavn, Kobenhavn K, Copenhagen 1051 Denmark

Nyhavn was built between 1671 and 1673 by Swedish prisoner of war. The oldest house in Nyahvn is Nyhavn 9, which dates back to 1681. Back in the 1970s, Nyhavn was a rougher area, but it was renovated in the 1980s and today is full of restaurants and pavement cafes. Hans Christian Andersen lived in Nyhavn at different times in no.18, 20 and 67. The memorial ancher at the end of Nyhavn was place there in 1951, as memorial to Danish merchant seamen, who lost their lives during the second World War.
