This tour will take you in the footsteps of the Diggers in Bullecourt, Peronne, and the St Quentin Canal. It completes the very popular "Full day Private Australian Battlefields Tour from Amiens" covering Villers-Bretonneux and Pozieres. This one-day Tour will focus on the years 1917 and 1918; the German Spring Offensive and the 100 days leading to the Armistice. We will also talk about the place of Australians in WW1, the effects this war had on the Diggers, and life afterward for them and the French civilians.

Stop At: Arras, Arras, Pas-de-Calais, Hauts-de-France

Arras is blessed with a very rich architectural heritage as its two Flemish Baroque style squares: « La Place des Heroes » and « La Grand Place » will confirm. It is also a place full of history going from Roman times and across the centuries including the first world war. During these 20 minutes, your guide will take you on a journey through time.

A visit to a CWGC cemetery is the occasion to find out how each country dealt with their dead when the war was over and to draw particular attention to the fantastic work of the CWGC.

Stop At: Musee Jean & Denise Letaille, 1 B rue d Arras, 62128 Bullecourt France

This museum tells the story of thousands of soldiers who came to defend the Arras sector. It was created by Jean and Denise Letaille, a farmer couple, from objects that witnessed the fighting of the Great War, found in the fields around Bullecourt after the two battles of Bullecourt in April and May 1917.
Hundreds of artifacts tell the story of the "Diggers" on one of the most deadly but often overlooked episodes of the Great War.

Stop At: Slouch Hat Memorial, Rue de Douai Impasse N 1, 62128 Bullecourt France

A Bullecourt school teacher, Claude Durand, began to translate Charles Bean’s account of the battles, partly for his own interest, partly for the benefit of his students. He was struck by the scale of the British and Australian casualties and realised that they had no local memorial. He and the mayor Jean Letaille started a campaign to build one. The funds were raised locally and the memorial was unveiled outside the village church on 24 May 1981.

This monument commemorates the two Battles of Bullecourt in April - May 1917 which will be described to you in detail whilst on the site.

Stop At: Hotel de Ville, 36 Place Faidherbe, 62450 Bapaume France

In Bapaume, the Germans had set up a mine in the Town Hall which would explode 9 days later. Australian soldiers started using the recently vacant building as a billet when the mine exploded killing them all as well as two French members of Parliament who were visiting the newly liberated area.

Stop At: 2nd Australian Division Memorial, 123 avenue des Australiens, 80200 Peronne France

The 2nd Australian Division took the strongly defended, Mont Saint Quentin by storm in one of the finest feats of fighting of the war. This Memorial was erected in 1925 to remember the 3000 Diggers who lost their lives during this battle. Your guide will describe and put this amazing event into context.

The Historial, Museum of the Great War was opened in 1992, at the very heart of the Somme Battlefields in Péronne. The contemporary museum, designed by architect Henri-Edouard Ciriani, was incorporated into Péronne’s 13th century castle, an emblem of the town of Péronne, besieged many times throughout history.

The visit to this cemetery will give us a chance to talk about the creation of the German cemeteries after WW1, their design, and the way German people remember their fallen

Stop At: Pont de Riqueval, Riqueval, 02420 Bellicourt, France

The Battle of St Quentin Canal began on 29 September 1918 and was part of the 100-day offensive involving the British, Australian, and American forces. Lieutenant General Sir John Monash with his well-earned reputation was put in charge of the Australian Corps. Full details will be given on this site.
